Between the 14th and 17th centuries, the Belluno, Friulian and Tyrolean areas experienced an important economic boom thanks to the exploitation of wood and iron resources.
The province of Belluno became famous thanks to the fame of the master swordsmiths capable of forging swords of the highest quality, marketed in Europe and coveted by sovereigns such as Maximilian of Habsburg. Fundamental were the Fursil Mines managed by the Bishop of Bressanone and whose natural steel, with elastic and anti-rust properties, was mined by miners coming from the Empire and in particular from the Tyrol area.
In the same period, the Maniago area was also the place of production of the famous blades, a product still made here today both at an artisanal and industrial level. Each territory involved in the project has precise peculiarities that blend together thanks to the common history that saw the area governed both by the Republic of Venice, represented by the St. Mark’s lion, and by the Habsburg Empire with the double-headed eagle.
The interdisciplinary project aims to enhance this tangible and intangible heritage through the creation of a tourist route along the three regions, the recovery of places linked to the production of swords, the organization of cross-border events, the creation of educational activities, cooperation in study and research, the creation of a cataloging system for bladed weapons.
The objective of the project is to combine the peculiarities of the regions involved with an approach to valorise their riches at a historical, cultural, tourist, tradition and skills level. The territory involved presents a cultural and natural heritage of the highest level, also including the area of the Dolomites, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Cross-border cooperation between the provinces of Belluno, Pordenone and the
Tirolo will be strengthened by creating new synergies in the cultural and tourism fields that allow competitive and sustainable development of the area and enhance public-private collaborations. This area has a high quality of life, but at the same time also a growing depopulation of the mountains and birth rates with predominantly negative trends. The project therefore wants to create a new awareness in
inhabitants relating to the tourist and therefore economic potential of the area by presenting an itinerary that connects the sites of interest linked to the extraction and processing of iron and recreating from a tourist point of view what was once a real proto-industrial production district which from Tyrol with its specialized miners, passing through the province of Belluno with the mines and the skill of the swordsmiths, reached Maniago with the famous production of blades. The valorization of this tangible and intangible cultural heritage made up of mines, factories, ancient knowledge and traditions will be implemented through an active and profitable comparison with the past, offering stimuli for the development of sustainable tourist proposals and the deseasonalization of tourism. Through research activities, the creation of exhibition and educational spaces, the recovery of historic sites, the creation of a tourist route, study and research, and the organization of dedicated events, the project aims to unite the three regions that have shared over the centuries fundamental human capital and knowledge.
